Our Story

Queers on Quads was started by an LGBTQIA human named Coco in June 2022, who runs and promotes this local Portland, Maine area queer quad skating community.

QoQ’s mission is to learn and improve on park, trick, and street skating while encouraging each other.

Coco

Coco decided to start Queers on Quads in June 2022, when they reached out to the local queer community to see if any new friends wanted to roller skate to celebrate Pride. Everyone got together and Coco decided it was time to make it formal. So Queers on Quads became official. The group has been meeting up ever since and is continually growing every day.

Coco’s Skate Story

Coco (she/they) has been quad roller skating since 2013, when they got started in an exercise program called Derby Lite (now called “Derby Skate Club” here in Portland) right here in Portland, Maine at the old Happy Wheels on Warren Avenue. The program was based around roller derby drills and skills, and that’s where Coco learned how to stay in skater stance, do derby drills, fall, stop, cross-over, and even more! This spurred her on to try roller skating in all kinds of places, but she found that the outdoors was especially appealing.

Ever since, Coco has loved to take those derby drill skills to street skating, trick skating, and park skating. Since 2021 they have taken roller skating more seriously than ever, and are continually working to be better.
